Cockroaches are sometimes attracted to moist basements and dirty bathrooms, but the room that attracts them most often is the kitchen. What is it about the kitchen that attracts roaches? Well, it can be one or more of a few factors.
Crumbs Under Appliances
You probably sweep the crumbs up off the floor pretty regularly, but when was the last time you cleaned beneath your oven or refrigerator? Crumbs tend to accumulate down there and those crumbs are very appealing to roaches. Try using your vacuum wand attachment to clean under the appliances without having to move them. You could also get a broom with a smaller head and a long, skinny handle and maneuver it under there sideways.
Dirty Dishes
Leaving dirty dishes in the sink overnight may not seem like a big deal, but any residue on those dishes will attract bugs overnight. If you have a dishwasher, make sure you put the dirty dishes in there — and close it — every night. If you do not have a dishwasher, your best option is just to do dishes every night before you go to bed. At least rinse them off if you are short on time.
Opened Packages
You open the bag of flour, use what you need, fold the top of the bag over, and then shove it in the cabinet. The problem is, that crumbled up bag is no match for hungry cockroaches. They can chew right through it to reach the food inside. To keep cockroaches at bay, you really should transfer food from open packages into sealed jars or thick plastic containers.
Non-Sealed Fridges and Stoves
You may figure that whatever is inside your fridge or stove is safe from cockroaches. However, many refrigerators and stoves do not seal as well as they should, and roaches can work their way inside to consume the contents. Check your refrigerator gaskets to see if they are torn or peeling. If they are, you should have them replaced to keep bugs at bay. Similarly, the gaskets in your oven should be replaced if they are no longer sealing. Make sure you periodically clean out the bottom of your oven, too, since the bugs can also access the interior through various vents.
If you do not provide cockroaches with a food source, they won't be interested in your home. Luckily, you can pretty easily address the factors above that tend to attract roaches to kitchens.
